Heater Repair
A heater that will not light or warm the room is a problem on a cold desert night. We inspect gas, electric, oil-filled, fan and infrared room heaters, find the fault and explain what it needs before any repair starts.
From our jobs
Common symptoms
- Gas heater will not light or goes out after a few seconds
- Electric heater switches on but gives no heat
- Heater trips the breaker or blows a fuse
- Fan not turning or making loud noises
- Burning smell, smoke or visible sparks
- Heater turns off by itself or will not hold the temperature
- Thermostat, dial or switch not responding
- Oil-filled heater only warms in one section
Possible causes
- Blocked burner, dirty gas jet or a faulty ignition on gas heaters.
- A failed heating element, thermal fuse or thermostat on electric heaters.
- Dust build-up that makes the unit overheat and shut itself off.
- A worn fan motor, damaged cable, plug or switch.
- Gas hose, regulator or cylinder connection problems on gas heaters.
How we diagnose and repair
- 1
We ask about the heater type, the fault and when it started.
- 2
We check the power or gas supply, cable, plug and switch.
- 3
We inspect the heating element or burner, thermostat, fan and safety devices.
- 4
We explain what we found and give you an estimate before any repair begins.
Repair or replace?
Many faults come down to cleaning, a new thermostat, a switch or an element. If the heater is very old or unsafe to repair, we will tell you honestly so you can decide whether to replace it.
If you smell gas, do not switch lights or any appliance on. Close the gas valve, open windows, leave the room and contact your gas supplier or emergency services. For electric heaters, unplug at once if you see sparks or smell burning, and never cover a heater while it is on.
Care tips
- Keep heaters away from curtains, bedding and furniture.
- Use gas heaters only in rooms with fresh air, following the manual.
- Clean dust from vents and fan guards before the cold season.
- Check hoses, plugs and cables for damage before each winter.
